Our Mission
WAWA/WeAreWideAwake is my Public Service to America as a muckracker who has journeyed seven times to Israel Palestine since June 2005. WAWA is dedicated to confronting media and governments that shield the whole truth.

We who Are Wide Awake are compelled by the "fierce urgency of Now" [Rev MLK, Jr.] to raise awareness and promote the human dialogue about many of the crucial issues of our day: the state of our Union and in protection of democracy, what life is like under military occupation in Palestine, the Christian EXODUS from the Holy Land, and spirituality-from a Theologically Liberated Christian Anarchist POV.

Vittorio Never Was as Much Alive as he is Now

Words from Vik's mom who is heading to Gaza with the next Flotilla...

Vik Arrigoni

(ROME Manifesto ) - Do you have to die to become a hero, to be on the front page of the newspaper, to watch TV even outside the home or to die in order to stay human?

Egidia Beretta Arrigoni

I remember the Vittorio at Christmas 2005, when he was imprisoned at Ben Gurion airport, the scars of the handcuffs which had cut off his pulse, the denied contacts to the consulate, the mockery trial.

And the Easter of the same year, when he was stopped by the Israeli police at the Jordanian border, directly behind Allenby Bridge, to prevent him from entering Israel, when he was loaded onto a bus and seven of them, one of them a policewoman, beat him “with art”, without leaving external signs, true professionals that they are, they threw him on the ground facedown, and as a last devilry tore out his hair with their potent boots.

Vittorio was persona-non-grata in Israel. Too subversive, one year before he had demonstrated at the Wailing Wall with his friend Gabriele together with the men and women from Budrus village. He taught and sang with them our most beautiful partisan song “O Bella ciao, ciao….”

Art by Carlos Latuff: Rest in Peace Brother Vik

At that time I did not watch TV, not even when in autumn 2008 an Israeli commando assaulted the fisherboat in Palestinian waters near Rafah and Vittorio was first locked up in Ramle and then sent home in prison clothes and slippers.

Certainly, now I can only thank the press and TV that they have approached us in a decent way, that they have “occupied” our house respectfully, without excesses, and they gave me the possibility to speak about Vittorio and his chosen ideals.

This lost son, now so much alive as he may never have been before, just like the seed that grows and dies in the earth, will bear prosperous fruit. I can see and hear this already in the words of friends, especially the youth, some of them close by and some of them far away who through Vittorio have known and understood how to make sense of “Utopia”, that the hunger for justice and peace, brotherhood and solidarity still prevails and that, as Vittorio said, “Palestine could as well be in front of your door”. We were far away from Vittorio, but we were closer than ever.

As of now, his lively presence which is evergrowing by the hour, is like a wind which from Gaza, his beloved Mediterranean Sea, is blowing wildly and bringing us his hopes and his love for those without a voice, for the weak, the suppressed, bearing us witness.

Restiamo umani."  (Translation from Italian: Sabine Stoehr)

Remembering Vik - Jeff Halper
Published today (updated) 16/04/2011 13:15

Less than two weeks after losing another friend and comrade, Juliano Mer-Khamis, I have to mourn and remember my fellow Free Gaza shipmate Vittorio (Vik) Arrigoni, who was brutally murdered last night by religious extremists in Gaza.

Vik was truly a person greater than life. He was so filled with energy, a mixture of joy, camaraderie and impatience with the confines of boats and prisons like Gaza, that he would suddenly lift you into the air, or wrestle with you.

He was a big, strong, handsome guy, ebullient and smiling even in the most oppressive and dangerous situations as if to tell you, "Yalla! These Israel naval ships shooting at us and the Palestinian fisherman cannot prevail over our solidarity, outrage and the justice of our cause!" Vik was wounded in one of those confrontations.

He would come up behind you and say: "The Occupation will fall just like this!" and he would wrestle you to the ground, laughing and playing with you as he did.

Vik, who like me received Palestinian citizenship and a passport when we broke the siege of Gaza and sailed into Gaza port in August 2008, was a peace-maker exemplar. Though he had a family in Italy, he cast his lot with the Palestinians (with his whole heart, as was his wont. On his Facebook page is written: "lives in Gaza").

He was especially known for accompanying the fishermen as they tried to ply their trade despite almost daily shootings at them from the Israeli navy, who confined them to the fished-out, sewage-filled waters near the Gaza coast. At least 18 fishermen have been killed in the past decade, about 200 injured, many boats wrecked and much equipment ruined.

But he was intimately involved wherever he was needed in Gaza, among the farmers as well as traumatized children, in times of distress -- his book, Gaza: Stay Human, documents his experiences among the people during Israel's three-week attack in 2008-09 -- and simply being with the people in their coffee shops and homes.

When it was learned he was kidnapped hundreds of appeals rose spontaneously not only from the international peace community but especially from a distraught Palestinian population in Gaza. A memorial service will be held today in Gaza City and other parts of the occupied territories.

Vik worked in the West Bank as well as Gaza, and was jailed three times before being expelled by Israel. But his peace work did not take the form of activism alone. Vik was a master of communication -- physical, verbal, written (his blog, Guerrilla Radio, was one of the most popular in Italy) -- and he mixed personal experiences, reportage and analysis effortlessly.

Vik was what we call a "witness": someone who put himself physically with the oppressed and shared with them their triumphs, tragedies, sufferings and hopes. Yet he was one who through his actions tried to affect genuine change. He -- like Juliano, Rachel and so many others who have sacrificed themselves for peace and justice in Palestine and the world over -- leaves a huge hole in our hearts, our lives and in the struggle.

I'll miss you, man. But every time I feel tired or discouraged, I’ll feel you lifting me up over your head and, with your huge smile and laughter, threatening to throw me overboard if I even hesitate in throwing myself into the fight.

You were and are the earth-force of the struggle against injustice. You will always hold us up and inspire us. Like the Palestinian fishermen you loved so much, we and all others fighting for the fundamentals of life throughout the world commit ourselves to seeing your vision through. Ciao, friend.

STAY HUMAN

Freedom Flotilla Renames Voyage in Honor of Slain Activist Vittorio Arrigoni

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Freedom Flotilla 2 Steering Committee

April 15, 2011 (London)

The next flotilla of boats that will set sail to break the siege of Gaza will be named FREEDOM FLOTILLA – STAY HUMAN in memory of Vittorio Arrigoni, an Italian activist and volunteer who was murdered Tuesday by an extremist group in the Gaza Strip. “Vik,” 36, was a passenger on the first small flotilla that broke the siege in 2008, and has lived and volunteered in the blockaded region off and on ever since.

“The murder of Vik is a tragedy for his family, fellow activists who knew him, and  the Palestinians who loved and admired him,” said the Steering Committee of Freedom Flotilla 2. “We condemn this senseless murder and the people who are behind it. They took the life of one of the most passionate supporters of justice for Palestine. This murder is damaging to the Palestinian struggle for freedom and justice as well as to our work in support of that struggle.”

The committee added that, in his honor, it is calling its next voyage FREEDOM FLOTILLA – STAY HUMAN, the name of the book he was in the process of writing.

“Nothing that we write can capture the man who was so full of the joy of life, a man with a pipe in his mouth and a captain’s hat always tilted at an angle on his head. The man with the big smile and gentle nature, someone who used his physical strength to hold small children in his arms, sometimes several at a time. His laughter and his last comments every time we saw him will ring in all of our ears as we board the boats to return to Gaza at the end of May. ‘Stay Human,’ he would say, then grin and clench his pipe in his teeth.

“We will do our best, Vik, to carry on the work you have done. The flotilla will return to Gaza in your honor.”

Arrigoni sailed on the first small boat to enter Gaza in the summer of 2008, one of 44 activists protesting the illegal blockade imposed by Israel against the 1.6 million Palestinians living in Gaza. He returned to Gaza in February of 2010, and was planning to depart Gaza to visit his ill father the following week. He was kidnapped by an extremist “Salafist” group for unknown reasons.

“The crime committed by these individuals do not represent the Palestinian people, who loved Vittorio,” said Mohamad Hannoun, a spokesperson from Italy for the European Committee to End the Siege of Gaza (ECESG), which is sponsoring a boat in the next flotilla. “And this act of brutal injustice will not deter activists around the world who will set sail in May to end the inhumane siege of Gaza and protect their inalienable right to be free from foreign occupation and live in dignity, freedom and independence. This is what Vik worked so hard for, and his spirit will be beside us as we set sail.”

Flushing out the traitors and criminals in our midst

The problem of lawlessness in the Palestinian territories

By Nureddin Sabir
Editor, Redress Information & Analysis

13 May 2007

The abduction of the BBC’s correspondent, Alan Johnston, and other criminal activities in the occupied Palestinian territories threaten to destroy the Palestinian cause from within. Palestinians must assert their national will and put an end to lawlessness now.

Palestinian patriots and supporters of the Palestinian cause throughout the world cannot but be alarmed at recent developments in the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel in 1967, in particular the Gaza Strip. We are talking about seditious activities perpetrated under the cover of Islam.

In a
previous article, we voiced our revulsion at the kidnapping of the British Broadcasting Corporation’s Gaza correspondent, Alan Johnston, a man who, for three years, had done a heroic job in bringing the misery of the people of Gaza to the eyes and ears of the world. At the time, we did not know the identity of his kidnappers but concluded that, given the predictable damage his abduction had done to the Palestinian cause, whoever kidnapped him was effectively an agent or a collaborator of Israel.

We now have a credible indication of the identity of Alan Johnston’s kidnappers. On 9 May, a group calling itself the “Army of Islam” (Jaish al-Islam)
released a tape showing Mr Johnston’s BBC identity card and containing a demand for the release of Muslim suspects being held in British jails. The tape, delivered to the Gaza office of Al-Jazeera TV channel and posted on a website often used by Al-Qaeda and other Islamist groups, specifically demands the release of Abu-Qatada, an Islamic cleric who is accused of having links to Al-Qaeda and is awaiting deportation to Jordan from Britain. The tape cited the support accorded to Israel by successive British governments and said that this justified the killing of all Britons, including Mr Johnston. Thus, according to the logic of the so-called “Army of Islam”, all citizens of states that back Israel are guilty, even those that support the Palestinian cause and other Muslim causes.

Little is known about the “Army of Islam” but what we do know about it points to a criminal, mercenary outfit, rather than to a political group, be it Islamist or jihadist.

According to
some sources, the “Army of Islam” is led by one Mumtaz Daghmash – also known as Abu-Muhammad – the chief of the Daghmash clan in Gaza. These sources say that the group was responsible for the kidnap of two Fox News workers in Gaza in August 2006, and that the captives were freed in exchange for 2 million US dollars. Other media sources claim that Daghmash is a key player in organized crime.

Despite the appearance of its message on a website linked to Al-Qaeda and other Islamist groups, all the signs are that the so-called “Army of Islam” is nothing but a mafia-type gang that is using the name and language of Islam as cover for its criminality. As the Palestinian national security director, Major-General Rashid Abu-Shibak, told Al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper on 10 May, the so-called “Army of Islam” is not an organization as such but a group of individuals who ... are operating for their private interests".

Observers of the Palestinian struggle will know that criminality within the Palestinian community and the Israeli occupation go hand in hand, for criminals not only undermine the fabric of Palestinian society but also often act as collaborators of Israel – one of the principal tools of the Israeli occupation. As such, we cannot rule out that the so-called “Army of Islam” has been hired – or else infiltrated – by Israel to do its dirty work in the occupied territories for, as we stated before, only Israel, only the Zionists, only the occupation benefit from its activities, including the abduction of Alan Johnston.

Those who claim to be the so-called “Army of Islam” are men who have no honour or dignity. They are the scum of the earth, filth that is beneath contempt and must be lanced from Palestinian society before it infects it terminally. The fact that these criminals call themselves the “Army of Islam” (they should be called the Army of Lucifer, or Jaish Iblees) and speak the language of the Koran only adds insult to injury. But, as true Muslims will know, the Koran warned of such charlatans when it said: “Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of humans, the King of humans, the God of humans, from the evil of the whispering slinker who whispers into the hearts of beings, from among the jinn and the humans." (114: Humans)

The actions of criminals masquerading as Islamic radicals is not the only form of seditious activity that has afflicted the occupied Palestinian territories lately. On 8 May, a United Nations-run school in Gaza was
attacked
by gunmen belonging to an Islamist Salafi group, resulting in the death of one man and the wounding of several others. The group said that it had carried out the attack because it objected to the idea of boys and girls mixing together and popular music being played.

We can cite many other activities of a similar ilk, including attacks on internet cafes, music shops and Christian bookshops, some executed by common criminals hiding under the cover of Islam, others carried out by Islamists such as the Salafi group mentioned above. None has anything to do with the Palestinian cause and all have just one beneficiary: Israel. As with the kidnappers of Alan Johnston, the perpetrators of all these attacks are, in effect if not in actual fact, traitors to the Palestinian cause and enemies of the Palestinian people. They must be treated as such by the Palestinian National Authority – both Hamas and Fatah – and by Palestinian society.

However, the chances of a reassertion of law and order – the reassertion of the national will of the Palestinian people – in the occupied territories are almost nil as long as the shameful, fratricidal war among Palestinians continues. It is against the background of this war, which is being fought between armed factions belonging to a Fatah party that is unable to come to terms with not being in power, and Hamas, against which the global forces of Zionism have ranged, that the general lawlessness in the Palestinian territories exists.

This brings us to the role of the hypocrites of the United States and the European Union, including Britain, in bringing about this state of affairs.

Ever since the Palestinian people voted in free and fair elections for Hamas to be their government, the EU and the USA, together with Israel, have
done their utmost to undermine the ability of Hamas to govern.

In both Iraq and the Palestinian territories, a weak central government and general lawlessness are strategic aims of Israel – in Iraq because it ensures Israel’s long-term strategic domination of the Middle East and in the Palestinian territories because it lends credibility to Israel’s claim that the Palestinians are incapable of governing themselves. While in Iraq the  situation has now well and truly slipped out of the control of the US occupiers, in the Palestinian territories Israel has found willing accomplices in the EU and the US to starve the Palestinians into submission. The outcome is clear for all to see: general lawlessness and criminality of which the abduction of Alan Johnston and the attack on the UN-run school are but two examples.

The Palestinian cause has survived against overwhelming odds, thanks to the unparalleled steadfastness and resilience of the Palestinian people. However, the lawlessness and criminality now prevalent in Gaza and, to a lesser extent, the West Bank now threaten to do what the Zionists and their European and American stooges have failed to achieve in over a century of conflict, that is, to destroy the Palestinian cause from within and wipe out support for the Palestinian people the world over. It is time for Palestinian society, from the grassroots to the Palestinian National Authority, to assert the national will of the people throughout Palestine, to unite behind the democratically-elected Hamas government and flush out the criminals and charlatans in their midst.

Israeli HIT LIST Includes Vittorio Utopia Arrigoni

Italian activist abducted in Gaza Strip 'found dead'

File photo of Vittorio Arrigoni holding aid at Gaza seaport in October 2008 Vittorio Arrigoni was a pro-Palestinian activist who had been in Gaza for several years

An Italian pro-Palestinian activist has been found dead in the Gaza Strip hours after being abducted, security sources in the Hamas-governed territory say.

Vittorio Arrigoni was seized by a radical Islamic group on Thursday morning and video of him blindfolded with tape was later posted on YouTube.

Hamas said his body was found hanged, after police received a tip-off.

Mr Arrigoni was the first foreigner kidnapped in Gaza since BBC journalist Alan Johnston was snatched in 2007.

It is thought he was kidnapped by Salafist radicals, who have often been in conflict with Hamas, the BBC's Gaza correspondent Jon Donnison says.

They consider Hamas, an Islamist movement itself, too moderate, our correspondent says.

In the video posted on YouTube, the kidnappers demand that Hamas release a number of Salafist prisoners.

Mr Arrigoni's eyes are covered with what looks like thick black tape.

The Italian man had been in Gaza for several years.

Hamas had been credited with eliminating the threat of kidnapping in Gaza until his abduction.

Palestinians call for release of Italian activist kidnapped in Gaza

INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT FREE GAZA MOVEMENT

For Immediate Release

Vittorio Arrigoni

(April 14, 2001) – Today, our friend and colleague, Vittorio Arrigoni, a journalist and human rights defender working in the Gaza Strip, was kidnapped by Salafists, members of a very small extremist group in Gaza.

Vittorio has been active in the Palestine cause for almost 10 years. For the past two and a half years, he has been in Gaza with the International Solidarity Movement, monitoring human rights violations by Israel, supporting the Palestinian popular resistance against the Israeli occupation and disseminating information about the situation in Gaza to his home country of Italy. He was aboard the siege-breaking voyage in 2008 with the Free Gaza Movement and was incarcerated in Israeli prisons several times. He was in Gaza throughout Israel’s brutal assault (Operation Cast Lead), assisting medics and reporting to the world what Israel was doing to the Palestinian people. He has been arrested numerous times by Israeli forces for his participation in Palestinian non-violent resistance in the West Bank and Gaza. His last arrest and deportation from the area was a result of the Israeli confiscation of Palestinian fishing vessels in Gazan territorial waters.

Vittorio frequently writes on the issue of Palestine for the Italian newspaper, IL Manifesto and Peacereporter. Additionally, he maintains a popular blog and Facebook page.

Khalil Shaheen, a friend of Vittorio and Head of the Economic and Social Rights Department at the Palestinian Center for Human Rights said, “This is outside of our traditions. We are calling for the immediate release of my best friend. Vittorio Arrigoni is a hero of Palestine. He was available everywhere to support all the poor people, the victims. I’m calling on the local authorities here in Gaza, and all security departments, to do their best to guarantee his safety and immediate release.”

Vittorio was granted honorary citizenship for his work on promoting the cause of the Palestinian people. Members of Gazan civil society are demanding his release; tomorrow at 4:00pm there will be a mass demonstration in Jundi Square.
