Our Mission
WAWA/WeAreWideAwake is my Public Service to America as a muckracker who has journeyed seven times to Israel Palestine since June 2005. WAWA is dedicated to confronting media and governments that shield the whole truth.

We who Are Wide Awake are compelled by the "fierce urgency of Now" [Rev MLK, Jr.] to raise awareness and promote the human dialogue about many of the crucial issues of our day: the state of our Union and in protection of democracy, what life is like under military occupation in Palestine, the Christian EXODUS from the Holy Land, and spirituality-from a Theologically Liberated Christian Anarchist POV.

"We're on a mission from God."
The Blues Brothers

"Observe good faith and justice towards all nations; cultivate peace and harmony with all...and passionate attachments for others, should be excluded; and that, in place of them, just and amicable feelings towards all should be cultivated. The nation which indulges towards another a habitual hatred or a habitual fondness is in some degree a slave...a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils."
George Washington's Farewell Address - 1796

"My aim is to agitate & disturb people. I'm not selling bread, I'm selling yeast."
Unamuno

"Imagine All the People Sharing All the World."
John Lennon

"If enough Christians followed the gospel, they could bring any state to its knees."
Father Philip Francis Berrigan

"You can stand me up at the gates of hell, but I won't back down."
Tom Petty

"If I can't dance, it's not my revolution."
Emma Goldman

"We have yet to begin to IMAGINE the power and potential of the Internet."
Charlie Rose, 2005

Only in Solidarity do "We have it in our power to begin the world again"
Tom Paine

"Never doubt that a few, thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world: Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

Declaration of Independence

We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that, among these, are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; that, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; and, whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it. -July 4, 1776. The Declaration of Independence

I add, if I can't laugh, it's not my revolution either, and so, I am off for a few days to do both and leave you with these few reflections.

On January 4, 2006, while in lower Nazareth [upper is for the Jewish settlers] I met with Mohammad Zeidan, the General Director of HRA/Arab Association for Human Rights: http://www.arabhra.org

The HRA was founded in 1988 in order to defend and promote social, cultural, economic, political, and civil rights for Palestinian Israeli citizens. Their methods are nonviolent and their ideology is based upon International Human Rights instruments.

He told me about a report entitled: BEHIND THE WALLS, all about how in Israel proper; not the occupied territories, more walls are being built.

The cover of BEHIND THE WALLS is an aerial photo of the town of Cesarea, a Jewish settlement with many swimming pools and verdant lawns and a slithering snake of a wall dividing it from the Arab community of Jessel Alaq that doesn’t even have a paved road.

Zeidan said, “This new policy of Israel is creating a situation that will soon be  another crisis. The USA supports these barriers and is contributing to a situation that is building to another crisis. The Palestinian Israeli citizens are being separated and when ever communities are separated for  national or religious reasons it is apartheid. Of course it is not the same situation as the apartheid in South Africa, but it is still apartheid.”

“Palestinians inside of Israel are 20% of the population and are the remnants of the indigenous peoples who remained after 1948 and received Israeli citizenship, but not equal human rights. They have been marginalized, discriminated against both politically and economically and all live under direct military law, just as in the occupied territories.

"From 1948 to 1966 we all lived under the military regime and were dealt with as enemies. We can vote for the Knesset, but we are not equal citizens because there is one law for the Jews and another for the Arabs. When curfews were imposed, they were only imposed on Arabs. There is no other democracy in the world that discriminates against it’s own citizens.

“From 1948 until 1966, using the British Mandate Military Laws, 60% of Palestinian land was confiscated. From 1966 through today, the military regime has been abolished and one would think that would mean equality and freedom, but it has not happened.

"Arab Israeli’s are discriminated against legally for we are excluded from the privileges every other Israeli citizen receives. There is more weight given to the Jewish state than it’s democratic ideals.

“An example is that Orthodox Jews are exempt from military service but receive every privilege and full benefits of any soldier. No Palestinian Israeli has ever been accepted into the IDF, for we are told we are not wanted.

"This means we are not given the same rights to further our education or obtain a housing loan. All Israeli’s at the age of 18 must serve in the military; it is the law. Since 1948 all the Ministers of the Defense have said to Arab Israeli’s; ‘No thanks, we don’t need you.’

“So, without military service we are denied benefits. We are citizens of Israel and pay taxes and obey the laws but we do not receive basic human rights that every human being deserves, just for being human.

“The discrimination in the public sphere is worsening. Haifa University published a poll of their young Jewish college students and 63% think that population transfer is a good idea. 67% believe Arabs do not deserve equal rights.

“The disengagement plan that is linked to the development of the Negev and Galilee and is supported by President Bush. What it really means is support for Jewish communities against the Arab minority interests although some areas are 50% Arab Israeli’s.”

The walls men build in their minds against the other must fall, before the walls men build with their hands ever can.

On January 11, 2008, I wrote: The "O" Word and Jesus Christ!

On January 10, 2008, when President George W. Bush said, "There should be an end to the occupation that began in 1967," a surge of hope inflamed me.

"Missing from Israel's security framing is the very fact of occupation, which Israel both denies exists and excises from all utterances."-Jeff Halper, page 1, Obstacles to Peace.

For Bush to say the "O" word while in Israel was a major step into reality.

I experienced a second surge of hope, when President Bush also warned Israel of its obligations to negotiate a "contiguous" independent Palestinian state. Bush admitted what anyone who looks at a map of the 'Holy' Land understands are Bantustans and that the "Swiss cheese isn't going to work when it comes to the outline of a state."

President Bush also said there must be "painful compromises" and for that to happen we American tax payers must become more politically engaged and rise up and speak out about where our money is laid down.

Human beings have rights and nations and states have obligations.

Bush acknowledged the rights of 4.4 million Palestinian diaspora refugees to receive compensation, but he ignored Article 13-2, of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS which Israel agreed to uphold when it became a state and which affirms: Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

What has been missing in every peace process and in the Road Map is the issue of human rights and international law. When leaders fail us, it is up to we the people to rise up and lead them in the way they should go and to remind them of their promises.

In his Second Inaugural Address, President George W. Bush affirmed, "In the long run, there is no JUSTICE without FREEDOM. There can be no human rights without LIBERTY. All who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know the United States will not ignore your oppression or excuse your oppressors. When you stand for LIBERTY, we stand with you."

Liberty means freedom from captivity and Justice is outlined in International Law and the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

Every unjust action Israel gets away with is always claimed to be for 'security'. And "that 'security' requires Israel control over the entire country, thus eliminating the possibility of any truly viable and sovereign Palestinian state: that one side must win and the other lose, rendering impossible a just peace based on human rights, international law, reconciliation and regional integration." [IBID]

In the Post 9/11 world American democracy has devolved for the claim of 'security' has allowed Big Brother too much control and it is paranoia and fear of 'the other' that runs through the heartland.

Jesus said, "You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free."

Freedom from fear of 'the other' is liberating and that journey begins by looking within at ones own heart and comes to understand that evil as well as good is already there.

Although it is not true, many believe America is a Christian nation.

True Christians follow what Jesus actually said and he laid it all out on the Mount of the Beatitudes.

About 2,000 years ago, when Christ was about 33, he hiked up a hill and sat down under an olive tree and began to teach the people;

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven."

In other words: it is those who know their own spiritual poverty, their own limitations and sins honestly and trust God loves them in spite of themselves who already live in the Kingdom of God.

How comforted we will all be, when we see, we haven't got a clue, as to the depth and breadth of pure love and mercy of The Divine Mystery of The Universe. God's name in ancient Aramaic is Abba which means Daddy as much as Mommy and He/She: The Lord has said, "My ways are not your ways. My thoughts are not yours." -Isaiah 55:8

Christ proclaimed more: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."

The essence of meek is to be patient with ignorance, slow to anger and never hold a grudge. In other words: how comforted you will be when you also know humility; when you know yourself, the good and the bad, for both cut through every human heart.

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, they will be filled."

In other words: how comforted you will be when your greatest desire is to do what "God requires, and he has already told you what that is; BE JUST, BE MERCIFUL and walk humbly with your Lord."-Micah 6:8

"Blessed are the merciful, they will be shown mercy." In other words: how happy you will all be when you choose to return only kindness to your 'enemy.'

"For with the measure you measure against another, it will be measured back to you." Christ warns his disciples as he explains the law of karma in Luke 6:27-38.

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they see God."

In other words: how comforted you will be when you WAKE UP and see God is already within you, within every man, every woman and every child. The Supreme Being is everywhere, the Alpha and Omega, beginning and end. Beyond The Universe -and yet so small; within the heart of every atom.

"Blessed are The Peacemakers: THEY shall be called the children of God."

Oh how happy the WORLD will be when we all seek justice and pursue it, for there can be none without the other.

"Blessed are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires, theirs is The Kingdom of Heaven."

And one fine day the lion will lie down with The Lamb and man will make war no more and that is the Kingdom of God.

"Love is not the starving of whole populations. Love is not the bombardment of open cities. Love is not killing......Our manifesto is the Sermon on the Mount, which means that we will try to be peacemakers." -Dorothy Day

Isaiah said it first, Jesus seconded it and I will third it:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim LIBERTY to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord." Luke 4:14:22

It will take an engaged citizenry for justice and for all who claim to be Christian to actually do what JC commanded before that will be reality.

Godspeed on it!

Immigrant absorption in Israel comes with perks and is called Aliyah, ["go up"] and is a fundamental concept of Zionism enshrined in Israel's Law of Return, which permits any Jew from any where in the world the legal right to government assisted immigration and settlement in Israel, automatic Israeli citizenship, unemployment benefits, free medical, and subsidized housing. Young adult immigrants receive free room, utilities, and three meals a day for the first five months and 100 percent of their tuition is paid by the government.

"HOPE has two children. The first is ANGER at the way things are. The second is COURAGE to DO SOMETHING about it."-St. Augustine

"He who is not angry when there is just cause for anger is immoral. Why? Because anger looks to the good of justice. And if you can live amid injustice without anger, you are immoral as well as unjust." - Aquinas

The Paradoxical Commandments
by Dr. Kent M. Keith

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

© 1968, 2001 Kent M. Keith

" In the final analysis, it is between you and God.  It was never between you and them anyway."-Mother Teresa

“You cannot talk like sane men around a peace table while the atomic bomb itself is ticking beneath it. Do not treat the atomic bomb as a weapon of offense; do not treat it as an instrument of the police. Treat the bomb for what it is: the visible insanity of a civilization that has ceased...to obey the laws of life.”- Lewis Mumford, 1946

The age of warrior kings and of warrior presidents has passed. The nuclear age calls for a different kind of leadership....a leadership of intellect, judgment, tolerance and rationality, a leadership committed to human values, to world peace, and to the improvement of the human condition. The attributes upon which we must draw are the human attributes of compassion and common sense, of intellect and creative imagination, and of empathy and understanding between cultures."  - William Fulbright

“Any nation that year after year continues to raise the Defense budget while cutting social programs to the neediest is a nation approaching spiritual death.” - Rev. MLK
Establishment of Israel
"On the day of the termination of the British mandate and on the strength of the United Nations General Assembly declare The State of Israel will be based on freedom, justice and peace as envisaged by the prophets of Israel: it will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion it will guarantee freedom of religion [and] conscience and will be faithful to the Charter of the United Nations." - May 14, 1948. The Declaration of the Establishment of Israel
